There’s no surefire way to prevent prostate cancer. But you may reduce your risk with the following tips.
To begin with, maintain a healthy weight
Men who are obese may have an increased risk of prostate cancer. If you are overweight or obese, work on losing weight. You can do this by reducing the number of calories you eat each day and increasing the amount of exercise you do. If you have a healthy weight, work to maintain it by exercising most days of the week and choosing a healthy diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Secondly, increase intake of fruits and vegetables
To add to, nutrients and vitamins contained in fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of getting prostate cancer. Green leafy vegetables contain compounds that help your body break down cancer-causing substances called carcinogens. A nutrient-rich diet may also help slow the spread of cancer. Eat fruits and vegetables throughout the day, and reduce intake of processed junk food.
Thirdly, eat less meat and dairy.
Studies have shown that men who eat foods high in animal fat, such as dairy and red meat, were more likely to develop prostate cancer. It’s important to note that these studies do not show that fattening foods actually cause prostate cancer; rather, they show there is a correlation between prostate cancer and consuming foods like cheese.
Fourthly, exercise regularly
One great way to possibly reduce the risk of prostate cancer is to exercise. Some studies even indicate that your risk of cancer decreases further the more vigorous you exercise. You should do aerobic exercise at least 30 minutes per day for 5-6 days out of the week. Try exercises such as biking, swimming, running, dancing, spinning, and rowing. You should also make an effort to become more physically active in your day-to-day life. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car further away from work, or use a standing desk instead of a seated one.
Additionally, avoid or stop smoking
Smokers also have a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer. But it’s not too late to quit. When compared with current smokers, prostate cancer patients who quit smoking for more than 10 years had the same mortality risk as those who never smoked.
