Syphilis is an infectious and a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a type of bacteria known as Treponema pallidum mainly characterised by a small, painless sore. It can appear on the s3xual organs, rectum, or inside the mouth known as chancre.
It is mainly divided into four stages; primary, secondary, latent, and late syphilis. Syphilis is most infectious in the first two stages.
Early detection and treatment cures it. However, having syphilis once does not prevent you from contracting it again. If contracted, it can become a very serious and dangerous disease not just for you, but for others as well.
Some of the tips to prevent transmission of syphilis includes the following;
Avoid s3xual promiscuity
If you are s3xually active, you can prevent syphilis by limiting your number of sexual partners. Your risk of contracting STIs goes up with the number of sexual partners you have. Sexually active people who have only one partner are safe, as long as neither partner has s3x with anyone else. For some people, however, this might be unrealistic. Therefore, try to limit your number of s3xual partners. f you have more than one s3x partner, your risk of STIs (including syphilis) increases. The more partners you have, the greater the risk.
Always protect yourself
It is important to always use condoms when engaging in s3xual activities. Condom helps reduce the risk of contracting STIs, but cannot prevent it altogether. Some risk remains via exposure to the mouth (those having oral sex) or via anus (those having anal intercourse).
Assess risk level with partner
The s3x conversation is always an uncomfortable conversation, but it is one of the best ways to avoid contracting STIs, like syphilis. Before you engage in a s3xual activity with a new partner, take time to talk with them about your s3xual history, as well as their sexual history. You can make the conversation less awkward by initiating the conversation and offering to relate your s3xual history first.
Avoid sharing s3xual toys
Avoid sharing s3x toys. For people who wish to use them can wash them after each use and use a fresh condom over them.
