How to take Postinor 2 for effective results

Postinor 2 commonly known as the morning after pill, is used only as an emergency contraceptive. It is taken by women to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of having unprotected s3xual intercourse. But Postinor 2 does not work if you are already pregnant and will not harm an established pregnancy or the baby.

When to take Postinor 2

It is estimated that, Postinor 2 prevents 85% expected pregnancies, 95% of expected pregnancies prevented when taken within 24 hours. However it declines to 58% if taken between 48 hours and 72 hours after unprotected intercourse.

How to take Postinor 2 for effective results

First and foremost, if you really do not want to be part of “i took the pills but they did not work” follow all directions given properly. The sooner the better and this is why you only get as many as 72 hours to get to the pharmacy and buy them. The closer you get to the 72nd hour, the lesser the chances of it working.

Take one tablet as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. The sooner that you take the tablet, the more effective it is likely to be. It is best to take it immediately after you receive it. The first tablet should be taken not later than 72 hours after intercourse. Take the second tablet exactly 12 hours after the first tablet.

As you must take the second tablet exactly 12 hours after the first tablet, you should work out a time when you will be able to take the second tablet (for example, not in the middle of the night when you will probably be asleep) and take the first tablet 12 hours before then.

What to do if I vomit after taking the pill?

After taking the emergency contraceptive pill, a few women vomit. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking Postinor 2, you need to take another pill. But if you are vomit 3 hours after you took the tablet, you do not need to take again.

How often can I take Postinor 2?

It can be taken any time during your menstrual cycle, unless the menstrual period is late. However, it’s not a regular method of contraception. Try to use it rarely, in emergency only. But never forget: it has much less side effects and health risks than abortion pills. Ideally, you should not take it more than once in one menstrual cycle. When used more than once in a menstrual cycle, it is more likely to distort your menstrual cycle.

After using Postinor 2

You may experience spotting or vag*nal bleeding earlier than expected. If you do not get your period within 3 weeks of taking the tablets you must see your doctor, as you may be pregnant. If Postinor-2 does not work, you could be pregnant. Your doctor will order a urine pregnancy test for confirmation.

Side effects of Postinor 2

All medicines have side effects. Most commonly the side effects are minor, however some can be more serious. Common side effects are those which occur in more than 1% Postinor-2. These include:

  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Fatigue
  • Vag*nal bleeding or spotting
  • Light headache
  • Dizziness.
  • Occasionally, diarrhoea occurs.
  • It sometimes causes tenderness of the breast.
  • Change in menstrual cycle and flow.
