Have you ever been nearly driven mad with itchy skin? Itching can occur because of many factors. Examples such as insect bites, allergic reactions, sunburns, skin infections and even pregnancy or aging.
An itchy skin is really annoying. It compels you to scratch the affected area. The medical name for skin itching is pruritus. Skin itching can affect any part of the body. It can either occur over the whole body or only occurs in a particular area.
It’s important to see your doctor if the itching lasts for several weeks to months. Your doctor will give you the treatment you need. However, if the itch is tolerable and there’s no other symptoms, you can easily treat it effectively with various home remedies.
Natural Remedies For Itchy Skin
To help soothe itchy skin, use the following tips:
1. Cold Water
Because cold and itch travel along the same nerve fibers, the use of cold can “jam the circuits” and deaden itch. Cool showers or baths or even ice packs can be an instant remedy for itchy skin. Again, hot water feels good temporarily, but it often leaves you feeling itchier later. Apply a cold, wet cloth or ice pack to the skin that itches. Do this for about five to 10 minutes or until the itch subsides.
2. Use aloe vera on the area
Aloe Vera contains anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also has plenty of vitamin E helps to sooth itchy skin. Fresh aloe vera is ideal! If you have a whole aloe plant, take a piece, cut it open, and then apply the gel over the itchy skin. Leave it to soak into your skin and sooth it. Otherwise, you can purchase aloe vera gel from any pharmacy or drug store. Look for 100% all-natural aloe vera gel. Do not apply aloe vera gel to open wounds or irritated or red skin.
This can be very cooling and soothing. Mix oatmeal in water and spread it on irritated skin. Add 2 cups of oatmeal to a lukewarm bath and soak to soothe itchy skin. Avoid using very hot water, as it can irritate the skin and cause it to itch more.
4. Baking Soda Bath
Baking soda is one of the best remedies for relieving itches. It exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. This help in reducing the inflammation and itchiness on your skin. Baking soda also acts as a natural acid neutralizer, which can help soothe your skin. Add a cup of baking soda to your bathwater and allow it to dissolve. Soak in the water for 15 to 20 minutes and then pat dry your skin.
5. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice can be directly applied on itchy skin to relieve the irritation. Squeeze the juice from a lemon or two. Dip a cotton pad in the lemon extract and apply it to the itching areas. Allow it to dry. Wash it off with water. If you have sensitive skin, dilute the lemon juice with some water before applying it. But avoid this one if you have been scratching a lot.
6. Stay hydrated
The most common cause of itchy skin is dry skin. The more water you drink, the more water gets absorbed into the skin. The recommendation is to drink at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. Drink lots of water to keep skin hydrated. Moreover water helps to remove toxins through urine. Excessive toxin levels in the body may create irritation and also itchiness.
7. Avoid showering more than once a day
Use lukewarm or cool water. Moisturize your whole body after each shower. Don’t stay in the shower or bath longer than 30 minutes. Bathing actually dries out the skin, especially if you use harsh or heavy soaps. Also avoid any soaps that contain dyes, perfumes, or alcohol. Lukewarm water is recommended because water that is too hot can damage the skin. This is by stripping off protective oils that help to keep the skin moisturized.
Neem is a herb that can fight itchy skin. It help in reducing the inflammation and itchiness on your skin. Put a bunch of neem leaves in steaming hot water. Allow them to steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Once the water turns lukewarm, go ahead and take a bath with it. You can do this every alternate day.
9. Avoid Scented Soap
Wash your clothing in unscented detergent. Because, scented detergent may contain chemicals and other irritants that make skin itch. Unscented detergent is more gentle and will help allow skin to heal.
Honey helps lock in moisture, has antioxidant and also anti-microbial properties. This is why it’s found in so many over-the-counter skincare products. Lightly heat 2 teaspoons of honey. Then apply it to skin while warm. Leave it on for 15 minutes, and then wash it off. You can do this once a day.
11. Wear loose clothing made of natural fibers
Try to wear pure, 100% cotton clothing as much as possible, especially for undergarments. Cotton is a natural fiber without added chemicals. This decreases the likelihood of adverse skin reactions and irritation. Cotton and linen also allow your skin to breathe. This enables sweat to evaporate and air to flow through it. Also cotton is easier to wash, dry, and maintain than many other fabrics.
Milk has anti-inflammatory properties. This often remove the itch from dry skin. Milk is very soothing to inflamed, dry, itchy skin. Pour some milk into a bowl, dip a clean white washcloth into the milk. Apply it to the dry itchy skin patch for 5 minutes. A milk bath once in a month can also help.
Mint contains significant amounts of menthol. Menthol has anti-inflammatory and anesthetic properties. This work wonders in getting rid of inflamed and itchy skin. Put a handful of mint leaves in 500 mls of water and bring it to a boil in a saucepan. Cover the solution and allow it cool. Once the solution cools down, strain it and soak a cotton ball in it. Apply it to all the affected areas. Do this until you get relief.
