What causes smelly armpits/underarm odor?

Contrary to popular belief, sweat by itself doesn’t smell. When your sweat interacts with the bacteria on your skin, it produces that unmistakable odor. Sweating or perspiration is a natural process arising out of out of stress, exercise and high temperatures. This same natural process becomes a nuisance aka body odour, when sweat encounters bacteria on the skin.

Your body contain apocrine glands often found in the genital area, nipples, armpits, breasts, and ears. While they are responsible for the secretion of milk in the breasts and earwax in the ears, they help in the secretion of sweat mainly in your genital area, nipples and underarms.

It is the sweat coupled with dead cells and bacteria on the body that produces odor. This foul-smelling odor, may also sometimes be the result of bacteria breaking down the protein-rich sweat.

Home remedies for smelly armpits

Follow the simple home remedies below.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is naturally acidic coupled with antimicrobial properties. It neutralizes the environment in your underarm area and destroys smelly bacteria. Using apple cider vinegar regularly can also help prevent bacteria from accumulating in your armpits. Dip a cotton ball in a small bowl of apple cider vinegar and apply it to your underarms twice a day.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is one of the best remedies to get rid of smelly armpits. It contracts the skin and also has antimicrobial properties. This help minimize the pores in your armpits and destroy the odor-causing bacteria in the area. Mix two drops of tea tree oil with two tablespoons of water. Using a cotton pad, apply this mixture to both your underarms. Do this twice daily for effective results.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is another highly acidic ingredient. It reduces the acidity of your skin and prevents bacteria growth. Take half a lemon and rub it directly on your armpits. Allow the juice on until it dries and then wash it off with water. Repeat once daily until you notice an improvement in your smelly armpits. If your skin is sensitive, you can mix the juice of half a lemon with half a cup of water and apply the mixture to your armpit.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a natural astringent which reduces the production of sweat. It helps fight bacteria that causes smelly armpits. Dip a cotton ball into witch hazel and rub it directly on your armpit after bathing. Do this twice daily until your smelly armpits improve.

Shower daily

Make an effort to shower at least once each day, no matter how tired or busy you may be. Showering regularly is an excellent way to ensure that your body is fresh and clean throughout the day. You should never forget to shower after working out, or your bad body odor might build up. Also don’t leave any moisture that invites bacteria onto your body.

Shave your armpits regularly

Shaving your armpits often will make it tougher for the bacteria in your armpits to find a cozy place to settle. If you’re really committed to get rid of smelly armpits, shave your armpits as often as you can.

Reduce stress

Since the stress reaction can cause sweat glands to produce sweat. Stress management and anxiety-reduction techniques can help you modulate your stress reaction and minimize your physiological sweat response.

Change and wash your clothes often

If you wear the same shirt for 3/4 days, then yeah, your armpits may smell. Make sure to always wash your clothes after you wear them. Also avoid wearing the same clothes for two or more days continuously, no matter how comfortable it may be.
