22 Soothing Home Remedies For Herpes Treatment

Just the word ‘herpes’ can send people into coma. The pain and discomfort that are associated with this condition are definitely not pleasant. Herpes is the common name of Herpes Simplex Viruses or HSV. Herpes is a highly contagious viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV – 1 and HSV – 2). Although the virus that causes herpes is incurable, there are home remedies that helps in the treatment of it’s symptoms. Continue reading to learn more!

Herpes Simplex Virus – 1 (HSV – 1)

The HSV – 1 is usually transmitted through contact with infected saliva (for instance, through kissing, eating from the same utensils, or sharing personal items). The virus causes small blisters or sores on or around the mouth. You may also have a general feeling of being unwell and painful mouth ulcers. The sores typically heal within 2 to 3 weeks, but the herpes virus remains dormant.

Herpes Simplex Virus – 2 (HSV – 2)

Herpes simplex virus type 2, on the other hand, is sexually transmitted. The HSV – 2 virus however, most often causes sores on the genitals and anal region. Cross infection can lead to genital herpes in the mouth and oral herpes in the genital area. This may occur through oral-genital contact. The virus can also be transmitted even when sores and symptoms are not visible.

Other parts of the body can also be affected by this infection and can develop sores, but this is not as common as the oral or genital forms of herpes. Sometimes genital warts are mistaken for herpes. The difference between herpes and genital warts is that while herpes is caused by HSV, genital warts are caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).

After an outbreak, the virus tends to retreat to the nervous system. It can become active and transmitted again through means such as;

  • Direct skin contact with mucous membranes or the saliva of the infected person.
  • Unprotected anal, oral or vaginal sex.
  • Intercourse with multiple partners.
  • Weakened immune system.
  • Stress and fatigue.
  • Menstruation and hormonal changes.
